Waterfowl that come to Turkey to migrate to warm countries during the winter, stop by Ankara Sarıyar Dam and create colorful images.
THEY ARE REGULARLY CALCULATED
Thanks to its wetlands and favorable climate, Turkey offers a safe resting place for waterfowl migrating to warm countries, especially from Northern Europe and northern Russia.
The birds that come to Turkey to gather energy and prepare for the new breeding period are regularly counted by the teams of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP) between January 15 and February 15 every year.
Standard censuses from the same regions and points provide long-term analysis of population trends. In this context, the Mid-Winter Waterfowl Census (KOSKS) carried out by DKMP General Directorate at Nallıhan Sarıyar Dam in Ankara was screened by AA.

Nallıhan Nature Conservation and National Parks President Fatih Lort said that the Mid-Winter Waterfowl Census was carried out with universities, non-governmental and voluntary organizations under the coordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in order to monitor the changes in water bird populations and wetlands.

Stating that the census is made at the point where the seasonal migration movements of waterfowl are the least and clustered, Lort said, “The aim here is to gain a long-term perspective. To monitor the changes in the habitats of the birds.”
As information comes from the field this year, it will be clear how many seasonal birds migrate to Turkey on the basis of species and numbers.

Ankara-based Nature Research Association Member and Bird Watcher Barbaros Demirci stated that they aim to determine the course of the birds over the years by drawing attention to the number of waterfowl that come to Turkey in winter and visit the wetlands in the Mid-Winter Waterfowl Census, with regular observations.

Demirci stated that the most common bird species in Sarıyar Dam are Angut, Bahri and heron.
NUMBER OF WATERFOWL
In the 2022 census carried out in 135 regions across Turkey, 1 million 396 thousand 369 water birds from 104 species were recorded.
Last year, 556 thousand 200 cuckoos, 103 thousand 304 sea blue, 84 thousand 685 black-headed gulls, 66 thousand 123 flamingos, 66 thousand 79 wild ducks were counted. A total of 15 million 971 thousand 789 birds were counted in 10 years.
