One of the biggest scientific projects of the 21st century is in the construction phase today. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will be the world’s largest radio telescope when completed in 2028.

Separated from South Africa and Australia, the UK-based facility will address the biggest questions in astrophysics.

He will conduct the most sensitive tests of Einstein’s theories and even search for aliens.

Delegations from the eight countries leading the project will attend the opening ceremonies today at the Murchison Shire in Western Australia and the Karoo in South Africa’s Northern Cape.

When the ceremonies are over, the bulldozers will step in and officially start the construction process.

The telescope’s initial architecture will include around 200 parabolic antennas and 131,000 dipole antennas resembling Christmas trees.

The aim is to create an effective collection area of hundreds of thousands of square meters.

This will provide SKA with unparalleled precision and resolution when examining celestial targets.

The system will operate in the roughly 50 megahertz to 25 gigahertz frequency range. In terms of wavelength, this ranges from centimeters to metres.
