Atlas, One of the World’s Most Famous Robots, Retired: Who Will Take His Place?

Atlas, one of the most advanced robots produced by Boston Dynamics, has retired. The company introduced the electric robot that will replace Atlas. Here are the details!

Atlas, the humanoid robot that can run and even do backflips, has retired after 11 years.

“Now it’s time to sit back and relax with our hydraulic Atlas robot,” Boston Dynamics, the robot’s manufacturer, said in a video showing the robot’s highlights. Atlas’ various movements and videos have gone viral over the years.

Electric Robot Introduced to Replace Atlas

Recently, the company unveiled the replacement for the hydraulic Atlas, an all-electric model that it said would be “more powerful and have a greater range of motion.” Robot expert Dr. Ingo Keller said that its “increasingly human-like abilities help push the boundaries of what robots can do.”

The company even released a new video showing the Atlas replacement bending its limbs into more complex shapes than its predecessor could achieve.

The first version of Atlas was built in 2013 as part of a robotics competition for the US military. In fact, this version was originally designed to help with search and rescue missions after disasters. At the time, Atlas was described as “one of the most advanced humanoid robots ever built”.
