The Name of ‘Proteo’ Will Live On In The Street Animals Center
The name of the dog named Proteo, who lost her life while working in the Mexican team that participated in the search and rescue efforts in Adıyaman, which was affected by the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, was given to the rehabilitation center for stray animals in Kocaeli.

A street animal rehabilitation center was built on an area of 6,100 square meters in Sepetlipınar Neighborhood by Başiskele Municipality.
In the center, an administrative building was built on an area of 164 square meters and a shelter on an area of 435 square meters. The city center was named after the dog named ‘Proteo’, who lost his life in the search and rescue efforts with the team from Mexico in the two earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6th. Proteo, who was stated to have died of old age, played an important role in rescuing many citizens from the wreckage with his team.

A Turkish and Spanish promotional sign with the ‘Proteo’ photograph was hung on the center’s sign. The following statements were included in the presentation:
“Proteo participated in the search and rescue efforts in Turkey, where he came after the earthquake disaster on February 6th. A member of the military police brigade in Mexico City, Proteo was born on June 13, 2013 and was approximately 9 years and 8 months old. On February 12, 2023. “Proteo’s death was met with great sadness in both Mexico and Turkey. As Başiskele Municipality, our street animal care home was named Proteo in memory of all the search and rescue dogs who saved hundreds of people, found thousands of explosives and served humanity in many areas.
“THE NAME WILL LIVE FOR YEARS IN OUR PROTEO CENTER”
Başiskele Mayor Yasin Özlü stated that the name of Proteo will be kept alive in this center for years.
Özlü said, “We decided to give the name of our dog, who served Mexico for many years and died in our country, and was welcomed by Mexicans with a ceremony, to our rehabilitation center, which was completed in the evaluation we made together. The name ‘Proteo’ will live on in our rehabilitation center for these stray animals for years.”
