What is Ashura?

Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram according to the lunar calendar. The fast recommended to be kept on this day is called “ashure fasting”.

The day of Ashure, which seems to have a special place in all Semitic religions, was also considered important by the Jahiliyya Arabs. There are even rumors that the Messenger of Allah fasted on this day for a while before and after his prophethood. It is a known fact that Muslims recommended this fasting during the Medina period.
