Türkiye Begins Chip Production: What, How and with Which Technology Will It Be Produced?

Chip Production Facility Investment and “IDEA Incubation” incubation center opening ceremony took place at TÜBİTAK Gebze campus. Turkey will start chip production in a short time.

While the effects of the chip crisis continue, the world’s leading economies have implemented very serious programs to secure their supply chain. With the CHIPS law in the USA and the EU Chip Law that followed, two important regions announced incentive and investment packages for semiconductor, chip and chip production. Now, speaking at the Chip Production Facility Investment Opening Ceremony, Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank said that 65 nanometer chips will be produced for the first time in 12 months in Turkey. Cooperation with Qatar will be made at the facility to be established.

Critical to Türkiye

Chip Production Facility Investment and “IDEA Incubation” incubation center opening ceremony was held at TÜBİTAK Gebze Campus a short time ago. Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varan, who attended the ceremony, made very important statements. Varank stated that technology and infrastructure investments for the future of the country continue at full speed, and that they have taken two strategic steps, each more valuable than the other, the first; He stated that it is related to chip production, which has recently disrupted all supply chain processes in the world.

While underlining that TÜBİTAK’s new Chip Production Facility is of critical importance for Turkey, Varank said that the global market size of the chip industry has reached 600 billion dollars and the chip market size will approach 1.5 trillion dollars by 2030. Minister Varank mentioned that the chip industry is of critical importance in terms of national security, and explained that especially developed countries announced new roadmaps for the chip industry one by one and started to implement them.

In his speech, Minister Varank said, “This will be a facility where critical components needed by the two countries are produced and marketed. With the technological solutions it has developed, it will contribute to our national product, reducing the current account deficit and employment. We will make Turkey the producer of critical technologies.” used the phrases.

Machines from Qatar

Minister Varank stated that the machinery and equipment required for the establishment of the production line in the chip investment, which they will implement with the cooperation between Qatar Hamad Bin Khalifa University and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, will be supplied by Hamad Bin Khalifa University. It was underlined that TÜBİTAK BİLGEM would be responsible for the construction of the clean rooms, the installation of machines brought from Qatar and the operation of the facility. TÜBİTAK Chip Production Facility will focus not only on production, but also on the design of semiconductors with domestic and national resources.

65mn Production Will Be Performed

Turkey is a country that has an infrastructure in chip production. TUBITAK President Prof. Dr. Referring to this issue, Hasan Mandal said, “Since 1983, there has been this competence in Turkey through our YİTAK, semiconductor technologies research laboratory, and at the same time, we have the competence and infrastructure to meet the needs of our country’s defense industry, albeit limited, since the early 2010s. ”

According to the reports, Türkiye already had the 250 nanometer competency. With the facility to be established, this will be reduced to 65 nanometers. This will be the first and main goal. When 65nm production is achieved, the “competence” obtained in the process will also be transferred to the developments. 65nm may be insufficient when we use 3nm and even 2nm technologies today, but it can be used in sensor production, defense industry, health, etc. “nanometer” is not very important in fields. Apparently, these points will be the target production areas.

Summary

TÜBİTAK Chip Production Facility will start chip production in a period of one year in the facility with a clean area of 2000 square meters on the campus. In addition to the 65nm production line, there will be R&D and product development opportunities at the Chip Production Facility. Production facility, clean room.
