Short History of Tunceli
Throughout the history, Tunceli has hosted many civilizations like Hittites, Urartus and Persian. After the Malazgirt War in 1071, during the period when the sovereignty of the Turks spread rapidly in Anatolia, the region was definitely under the rule of the Turks in 1087. The region has been under the rule of the Seljuks, Mengücekler and Akkoyunlular since 1087, and in 1473 it was under the rule of the Ottomans. After the proclamation of the Republic, on December 25, 1935, with the temporary center of Elazığ, Erzincan’s Pülümür, Elazığ’s Nazımiye, Hozat, Mazgirt, Pertek, Ovacık and Çemişgezek districts were connected and Tunceli Province was established. On this date, the name of the area that was previously Dersim was changed to Tunceli.
