During the sounding excavations carried out in the Tyana Ancient City by the Nigde Museum Directorate, a female figure made of marble with clear facial features and intact was found. In addition to the artifact, burial structures belonging to the Byzantine period were also found during the excavations.

Museum Director Yakup Unluler said that they identified a settlement and necropolis (cemetery) area in the northwest of the Tyana Ancient City in the Kemerhisar town of Bor district in 2018.

BYZANTINE TOMB STRUCTURES

Celebrities said that at the end of six sounding excavations, they found the remains of Roman architectural structures and burial structures from the Byzantine period, and that it was understood that the area was used as a cemetery during the Byzantine period after the Roman period.

“SECOND CENTURY”

Saying that the work is made of fine grained marble, Unluler said, “The eyes, nose and lips are embroidered in proportion to the chin structure. “We think that it should be dated to the 1st century AD, but when we look at the details on the hair, it shows us that it mostly belongs to the 2nd century.”

“MORE DESCRIPTION OF A YOUNG WOMAN THAN A GODDESS”

Celebrities said that they thought that the figure was made by a high-ranking or rich person because of the high quality of the marble and the very high workmanship.

WORKS OF THE ROMAN PERIOD ARE EXHIBITED

Noting that the Roman period artifacts unearthed from the Tyana Ancient City are exhibited in the 4th hall of the museum, Unluler stated that this work will be opened to visitors after the arrangement to be made in the showcase.

“WE THINK WE WILL REACH MORE LIKE THIS TYPE OF WORKS”

Unluler said that the area was declared a first-degree archaeological site by the Kayseri Conservation Board and said, “No application other than scientific excavation can be carried out in these areas. Excavations are planned by the excavation directorate of the Tyana Ancient City in that region. We think that we will reach more such artifacts in this area with the scientific excavations to be carried out. because it is an important place,” he said.
