Özgür Özel becomes the 8th Chairman of the Cumhuriyet Halk Party (CHP)
In the second round of voting at the 38th Ordinary Congress of the Cumhuriyet Halk Party (CHP), Manisa Deputy Özgür Özel was elected chairman with 812 votes.
The presidential election at the 38th Ordinary Congress of the Cumhuriyet Halk Party (CHP) was left to the second round of voting as an absolute majority was not achieved in the first round.
Voting in the second round of the election, which started at 00:30, was completed at 02:30.
After the vote count, Özgür Özel was announced as the new CHP chairman with 812 votes. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu received 536 votes.
8th General President
Manisa MP and CHP Group Chairman Özgür Özel was elected as the party’s 8th chairman at the 38th Ordinary Congress held today.
Who is Özgür Özel?
Özel was born in Manisa in 1974.
After completing his undergraduate studies at Ege University Faculty of Pharmacy, Özel started working as a self-employed pharmacist in 1999.
He served as the general secretary of Manisa Pharmacists’ Chamber for one term between 2001-2007 and as the chamber president for two terms, and served as the treasurer of the Turkish Pharmacists’ Association for one term and as the general secretary for two terms between 2007-2011.
Özel was elected as Manisa MP for the 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th terms.
Having served as CHP Group Deputy Chairman in the 25th, 26th and 27th terms, Özel assumed the CHP Group Presidency in the 28th term.
Speaking German and English, Özel is married and has one child.

On his social media account, Kılıçdaroğlu said, “I have carried the trust of our Great Leader Atatürk with honor until today. Today, with the decision of our congress delegates, I am saying goodbye to the presidency. I would like to thank everyone who has shouldered our struggle until today. I congratulate our new President Özgür Özel, who was elected as the new President, and wish him success.”
