One Of The 6 Best Museums In Europe Is In Samsun
Commissioned by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality and organized by the European Academy of Museums (EMA), the ‘XX. In 2022, 32 thousand people visited the City Museum, which was selected as one of the 6 best museums in Europe in the Luigi Micheletti Award-Winning Museum Competition.
The artifacts exhibited in the Samsun City Museum, which was established by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality in 2013, provide information about the city’s history, geography, culture, social life, economy, tourism, art history, architecture and food culture. In the museum, which includes the chronological history of the city, the period of the National Struggle, which started with the arrival of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on May 19, 1919, is also told. The museum, which consists of two parts, is one of the first places visited by those who come to the city. The number of visitors increasing every year, Samsun City Museum hosted approximately 32 thousand people in 2022.
“ALL WORK IS DONE THROUGH DONATION”
Providing information about the museum, Samsun City Museum Unit Supervisor Art Historian Nilgün Sarıçoban said, “The city museum is the work of many years of effort. There is a great work effort not only in field research, but also as a result of symposiums and meetings with scientists. The City Museum is very important to our city. After the expropriation of two buildings belonging to the State Railways, it was converted into a museum. No works were purchased through purchase. All of the works were brought by donation. This is a work that has emerged with the efforts of our citizens who have given their hearts to Samsun. The two buildings are connected by a glass tunnel. While the first building usually describes the historical process, the second building mostly consists of sections where our traditions and customs, our culinary culture, our education history and our neighborhoods are explained.”
“FIRST PLACE TO VISIT”
Stating that a tourist who does not know Samsun at all should first visit the city museum, Sarıçoban said, “The City Museum is the guide of our city. Our experts give information about where and what to do. Of course, this year, our number of visitors increased after the pandemic. In 2022, approximately 32 thousand people visited our museum. In addition, we hosted thousands of students in the 2021-2022 academic year as part of the ‘One Day at the Museum’ project, which we carried out together with the Directorate of National Education. Our teachers prefer our museum as a place of education.”
AWARD-WINNING MUSEUM
Samsun City Museum ‘XX. It was selected as one of the 6 most prestigious museums in Europe in the Luigi Micheletti Award-Winning Museum Competition. The museum was awarded the “Project Special Award” in 2013 and the “Museum Incentive Award” by the Historical Cities Association in 2015. More than a thousand works are exhibited in the museum, and about 100 of them are registered in the inventory.

In addition, in the “City Memory” section of the museum, there are books that are the memory of the city.
