Short History of Mersin

It is known that Mersin, which was called Cilicia in the classical period, has been an important settlement since prehistoric times. In the archaeological excavations carried out in Yumuktepe and Gözgule, the “Neolithic Age” was identified as the lowest layer. The region made a transition between the Mine Age and the Bronze Age after the Neolithic Period. The Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans and Byzantines ruled the region respectively. Then the city was conquered by the Seljuks in the XI century, Karamanoğulları and Ramazanoğulları in the XIV century, and the Ottoman Empire in the XV century. With the loss of World War I, Mersin was under French and English occupation on 1919. Due to the determination of the Turkish National Struggle, occupation forces left Mersin on January 3, 1922. After the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, the city has grown rapidly, combining industry, commerce, agriculture and tourism.
