Short History of Mersin

It is known that Mersin, which was called Cilicia in the classical period, has been an important settlement since prehistoric times. In the archaeological excavations carried out in Yumuktepe and Gözgule, the “Neolithic Age” was identified as the lowest layer. The region made a transition between the Mine Age and the Bronze Age after the Neolithic Period. The Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans and Byzantines ruled the region respectively. With the loss of World War I, Mersin was under French and English occupation on 1919. Due to the determination of the Turkish National Struggle, occupation forces left Mersin on January 3, 1922.
