He woke up to find £8.9 million in his account: Accidentally became the youngest multimillionaire overnight

A young man in the UK became an ‘accidental’ millionaire overnight when he woke up to find more than £8 million in his bank account.

Dane Gillespie, 18, woke up one morning to discover £8.9 million in his bank account. Remembering that he had recently paid a cheque for his grandmother for £8,900, Gillespie discovered that the bank had written the cheque amount with more ‘zeros’ than it actually was.

‘His father wanted to order a Porsche’

Gillespie shared a screenshot of his balance with his mother Caroline after realizing what the bank had done, depositing 1000 times the amount he was supposed to pay. The young man’s mother said:

“We couldn’t believe it, for a few hours my son thought he was a millionaire. On Wednesday morning he had £8.9 million in his account. Good thing he told us and didn’t go and ruin everything. The next minute my wife sent me a text with a photo of his bank account details. He said, ‘I’m going to order a Porsche’ and I said, ‘Don’t be ridiculous, it’s not our money, we need to sort this out’.”

Realizing its mistake, the bank corrected the account balance shortly after the incident. Gillespie’s record as the ‘youngest multimillionaire’ was short-lived.
