Scottish First Minister Hamza Yusuf announced his resignation at a press conference in Edinburgh. “I have come to the conclusion that repairing our relationship beyond the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm,” Yusuf said. Hamza Yusuf’s SNP and the Green Party of Scotland had decided to break the coalition that had lasted for 3 years last Thursday.
It was claimed that Hamza Yusuf, the First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), was preparing to resign. Yusuf, the first Muslim Prime Minister of the country, officially announced his decision to resign.
The SNP and the Scottish Green Party had decided to break the 3-year coalition last Thursday after a disagreement on emission targets. The claim that Yusuf would resign was put forward after this decision. In his statement after the power-sharing agreement with the Green Party of Scotland ended, Yusuf stated that he did not plan to resign, stating that he thought he would win the vote of confidence. However, the allegations turned into reality. Hamza Yusuf, who took office on March 29, 2023, resigned from his post.
WILL SERVE AS 1ST MINISTER UNTIL HIS SUCCESSOR IS ELECTED
“I have come to the conclusion that repairing our relationship beyond the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm. I have therefore notified the SNP’s national secretary of my intention to step down as party leader and asked him to launch a leadership contest for my successor as soon as possible,” Yusuf said at a press conference in Edinburgh. Yusuf said he will continue to serve as first minister until his successor is elected.
