Anitkabir

Anıtkabir located in Turkey’s capital of Ankara’s Cankaya district is a complex containing the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The construction of the building complex, designed by Emin Onat and Orhan Arda, started in 1944 and was completed in 1953. The complex consists of various buildings and monuments, especially the mausoleum building, as well as a wooded area called Peace Park. There is a symbolic sarcophagus of Atatürk in the part called the Hall of Honor of the mausoleum building, which is the main structure in the complex. Atatürk’s body was buried in the grave room on the ground floor of this building. The entrance to the complex is made from the beginning of the alley called Lion Road and this road reaches a rectangular square where ceremonies are held. The general architecture of Anıtkabir bears the characteristics of the Second National Architecture Movement period between 1940-1950. Islamic and Ottoman architectures were not consciously preferred in Anıtkabir architecture. Anıtkabir is located on the hill with an altitude of 906 m, formerly known as Rasattepe and today called Anıttepe. It is administratively located in Mebusevleri District of Çankaya district of Ankara, at number 31 on Akdeniz Caddesi.
