With Which Conditions Can Refugees Benefit From Right To Education in Turkey?
The right to education has been accepted as one of the substantive rights in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world. For this reason, the right of foreigners legally staying in Turkey to receive training from various institutions in the country is legally guaranteed. If you are a refugee in Turkey and you want your children to start or continue their education, it is very important that you have applied for international protection. After your application to the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in the city where you were referred as a refugee, if your international protection application is approved, you will have an International Protection Applicant Identity Document. With a foreigner’s identification number starting with 99, it becomes legal for you to stay in Turkey and your children are entitled to benefit from education rights in Turkey at primary, secondary and higher education levels.
How can foreigners enroll their children in school?
If your international protection application has not been finalized yet, it is possible to enroll in public schools with your International Protection Applicant Identity Document, and if your international protection application is positive, with your International Protection Identity Document. You can learn all the legal procedures and documents required for registration from the District Education Commission. If the child has various educational documents in the past, it will be in your best interest to have them with you during registration. If a valid document cannot be obtained, all procedures for the student’s class determination are carried out by the District Education Commission.
In addition, if you do not have a foreigner’s identity number or if you have not received your International Protection Applicant Identity Document, a foreign student can be enrolled in education as a “guest student”. Education in public schools in Turkey is completely free and the language of education is Turkish.
