Salt Lake, where 70 per cent of Turkey’s salt need is met, is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List with its unique natural structure.
The algae in the lake, which is visited by many local and foreign tourists every year, protects itself from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays by producing red-coloured beta-carotene substance during the summer periods when the temperature and salinity increase.
Again in this period, the colour of the lake turns pink or red as halo bacteria reproduce too much.
A large part of the Salt Lake turns white as the salt rises to the surface in the summer months.
This change in the lake offers a visual feast to its visitors.
