With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, the gaming community was very excited about the Call of Duty series coming to Xbox’s famous service Game Pass library. However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer stated in his latest statement that this situation could be disrupted.
“It takes a lot of effort to bring Activision games to Game Pass”
In an interview with IGN, Phil Spencer lowered expectations for Activision-Blizzard games on Game Pass and warned that the company really needs to work hard to bring its games to Game Pass.
Answering a question about Call of Duty coming to Microsoft’s Game Pass game service, Spencer said: “People think the deal will be complete and everything will be immediately available on Game Pass. This is not true. We have work to do, just mechanical work. It will take time to prepare the games.”
The Xbox boss adds that this delay is not unique to the Activision-Blizzard purchase, adding that Microsoft’s previous purchases always require time for local games to be included in Game Pass.
Looking back at Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda in 2021, it certainly didn’t take long for Bethesda games to appear on Game Pass, with 20 games added from the studio’s back catalog just three days after the deal was finalized.
During the interview, Spencer avoided going into details about Call of Duty on the Game Pass service, bringing the subject up to Microsoft’s proposed deal with Ubisoft and how it relates to its ongoing negotiations with the UK’s CMA (Certified Management Accounting Office).
It was previously claimed that Call of Duty would not be brought to Game Pass until 2025, but this information came from a CMA report, so this may not be Microsoft’s official plan. Spencer hasn’t confirmed that Call of Duty will definitively come to Game Pass, leaving Microsoft’s plans for this major game franchise unclear.
