Taksim Square
Taksim Square, located in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, is one of the most important and popular points of the city. The square is one of the most popular tourist destinations. Taksim Square, which is a very rich area with its hotels, shopping venues and entertainment venues, turned into a square in the Republic Period. In 2013, the traffic in the square was definitely closed and pedestrianized. The name of this famous square of Istanbul comes from the purpose established to divide the water. Maksem was built by IMahmut between 1732 and 1833. Along with Taksim Maksemi, water resources in Belgrad Forests were distributed via the transmission line thanks to the Levent-Mecidiyeköy line. Today, Taksim Maksemi is in a dry condition. Before the foundation of the Republic, Taksim Square was known as the road junction at the edge of Talimhane Square and Taksim Barracks, where Sıraselviler Street and İstiklal Street were parallel to each other. The military and state buildings built in the region in the 1870s slowly began to make the military and geography and spirit of Taksim clear. There have been constant changes in Taksim Square over the years. However, one of the most important reasons for this square to be a square is the Republic Monument. The reason for this is that the buildings surround the monument and the monument gives identity to the square. Looking at all these processes, the removal of Taksim Barracks, the construction of Taksim Gezi Park, the positioning of the Republic Monument here, the removal of the Crystal Casino, the opening of Tarlabaşı Street, the construction of AKM created the identity of Taksim Square.
