After the increasing exchange rates and inflation in our country, citizens have been stating for a long time that larger amounts of banknotes are needed. There has now been a more serious development regarding the 500 and 1000 TL banknote, which has been on the agenda before.
Although the microphones extended to the authorities for the last few years on the subject remained uncalled, a remarkable statement on the subject came from Fatih Karahan, President of the Central Bank.
In fact, the first developments on the subject had emerged in the past days with the statement “Compatible with new banknotes” on the money counting machines offered for sale in some markets. Today, Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan clarified the issue.
The Need for 500 and 1000 TL Banknotes Will Be Investigated
Speaking at the 2nd Inflation Report meeting, Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan stated that studies on whether there is a need for new banknotes are ongoing and used the following statements:
“Whether there is a need for new banknotes depends on many factors. We decide according to macroeconomic financial analysis and technical evaluations. In this context, we also take into account the changes in the composition of the bills in circulation. If there is a need as a result of our analysis, we will take the necessary steps.
We are ready to do whatever is necessary afterwards. Support from public finance is also important. Coordination is not limited to this. There is also the issue of determining managed and directed prices.”
