SpaceX has successfully sent NASA’s Tropospheric Emissions Pollution Monitoring (TEMPO) device into orbit, which will control air pollution over the North American continent.
The TEMPO device was sent into a stable orbit over the equator attached to the “Intelsat 40e” communications satellite on the rocket. After the device is fully placed in orbit, it will perform air pollution control over the North American continent.
Kevin Daugherty, project manager for TEMPO at NASA’s Langley Research Center, said, “TEMPO will measure air quality hourly during the daytime across all of North America, from Puerto Rico to Canada.” said.
Daugherty said that “(TEMPO’s) total cost to NASA is about $210 million.”
It is stated that TEMPO will measure the ultraviolet and near-infrared light spectra to detect levels of key air pollutants, including ozone and nitrogen dioxide, in the lower troposphere.
