A decision that caused controversy was signed in the rural Karaağız District of Bursa’s Büyükorhan district. According to the joint decision taken by the headman’s office and the village association, it was forbidden for men and women to have fun together at weddings, henna and military farewell parties, saying “it is not religiously appropriate”. It is stated that the decision will be effective from 1 January 2024.

WOMEN AND MEN CANNOT HAVE FUN TOGETHER
One of the villages of Bursa’s Büyükorhan district, Karaağız District Headman and Karaağız Solidarity Association took a decision that caused controversy. The headman’s office and the village association forbade women and men to have fun together at weddings, henna and military farewell parties, saying “it is not religiously appropriate”.
“NOT RELIGIOUS”
In the decision shared by Karaağız Aid Association President Hayri Sönmez on social media, the following statements were made: “Invitations such as writing, socks and shirts are prohibited in our village weddings, circumcision societies, except for invitation cards. It has been concluded that it is not appropriate to play it in terms of our religion and upon the complaints from the village people.
“VALID FROM 1 JANUARY 2024”
It has been deemed appropriate for our women to organize a special entertainment for women on Saturdays at a time determined by the wedding host. Village people are kindly requested to comply. The decisions taken are effective as of January 1, 2024.
