According to the Billionaires List published by Forbes for the 37th time, in 2023 the number of billionaires decreased to 2,640 and the total wealth of billionaires decreased to 12.2 trillion dollars. While 26 names from Turkey entered the list, İbrahim Erdemoğlu became the richest Turkish businessman.
While the number of people on the American business magazine Forbes’ Billionaires List dropped to 2,640 this year, the total wealth of billionaires decreased by $500 billion to $12.2 trillion.
Number of Billionaires Decreased by 28 Percent
According to the Billionaires List published by Forbes for the 37th time this year, the number of billionaires worldwide decreased by 28 compared to the previous year to 2,640, recording the second consecutive decrease.
As the economic turbulence hit the public and private sectors, the wealth of billionaires decreased by 500 billion dollars to 12.2 trillion dollars.
Elon Musk is Now in 2nd Place
Elon Musk, whose shares of Tesla company, which he owned fell after he bought Twitter at a high price last year, fell from the 1st to the 2nd place in the billionaires list. Musk’s wealth was calculated as approximately 180 billion dollars, a decrease of 39 billion dollars compared to last year.
Bernard Arnault, chairman of luxury goods giant LVMH, topped the list with a fortune of $211 billion. Thus, for the first time, a French citizen was at the top of the list.
254 People Aren’t Billionaires Anymore
The wealth of nearly half of the billionaires decreased compared to last year, while a total of 254 people lost their billionaire status.
Among those who lost this status, names such as Sam Bankman-Fried, Founder and former Chief Executive of crypto money exchange FTX, Gary Wang, one of the former executives of FTX, and musician Kanye West, who were accused of fraud, drew attention.
The United States continued to be the country with the most billionaires, with 735 list members with a total wealth of $4.5 trillion. China ranked second with 562 billionaires (including Hong Kong and Macau) with assets of $2 trillion, followed by India with 169 billionaires with a net worth of $675 billion.
26 Names from Turkey on the List
This year, 26 names from Turkey were included in the Billionaires List. Erdemoğlu Holding Chairman of the Board of Directors İbrahim Erdemoğlu, with his wealth of 5.3 billion dollars, became the richest person in Turkey and the 497th richest person in the world.
The total wealth of Turkish billionaires was estimated at approximately $57.8 billion.
The number of people on the Billionaires List published by Forbes in 2021 broke a record by rising to 2,755, and despite the Kovid-19 outbreak, the total wealth of billionaires reached 13.1 trillion dollars with an increase of 5 trillion dollars.
