Floods in Brazil: Death toll rises to 31
The death toll from flooding caused by heavy rains in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state has risen to 31.
The loss of life is increasing in the flood disaster that hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Governor of Rio Grande do Sul state Eduardo Leite said, “Unfortunately, we have confirmed that the lifeless bodies of 4 more people have been reached” and announced that the loss of life in the flood disaster has risen to 31.
“There are still many people trapped on the roofs of their homes who need to be rescued,” Leite said, adding that hundreds of rescue workers, police and volunteers are continuing their efforts to reach the flood-affected areas in the state where a state of emergency has been declaredStating that the rains will continue until Thursday, Brazil’s Independence Day, Leite warned that the situation could worsen.
On the other hand, it was announced that more than 52 thousand residents and 70 towns in the state were affected by floods, while more than 5,300 people had to leave their homes.
