According to the information received from the Ministry of Justice, the process for the extradition of Özer, who has an arrest warrant for “establishing and managing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes, fraud by using information systems, banks or credit institutions as a tool, fraud of merchants or company managers and cooperative managers, laundering the assets derived from crime” and is wanted with a red bulletin, has reached the final stage.
Upon the request of the Ministry of Justice, Özer was temporarily detained in Albania, where he had fled. The Ministry of Justice’s Directorate General for Foreign Relations and European Union Affairs requested Özer’s extradition. Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ also had a telephone conversation with Albanian Minister of Justice Ulsi Manja and the extradition issue was discussed.
After the decision of the Albanian judicial authorities to “extradite Özer to Turkey” was approved by the high courts, action was taken to bring Özer to Turkey. Faruk Fatin Özer will be brought to Turkey tomorrow.
Özer, wanted under a red notice, was arrested in Albania on August 30, 2022. The decision of the Elbasan Court of First Instance on September 2, 2022 to continue Özer’s detention was appealed by Özer’s lawyers on September 14, 2022. On September 20, the Durrës Court of Appeal upheld the decision on Ozer’s detention.
The Elbasan Court of First Instance, in a hearing on November 17, 2022, declared that the request of the Elbasan Prosecutor’s Office to “allow the extradition of Özer to Turkey” was accepted, and Özer appealed this decision on December 7, 2022.
The hearing on this decision at the Durrës Court of Appeal was held on December 16, 20, 27 and 30, 2022. During the hearing on December 30, 2022, the Durrës Court of Appeal upheld the decision to extradite Özer to Turkey.
The Supreme Court of Albania rejected the appeal of Faruk Fatih Özer, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Thodex, against the decision to extradite him to Turkey.
