Device developed to keep a deceased person’s brain alive
US scientists have developed a device that could allow the brain to function independently of the rest of the body. Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center were able to isolate the blood flow to the brain of a pig anesthetized with ketamine. A computerized algorithm also maintained the necessary blood pressure, volume, temperature and nutrients the organ needed. Despite receiving no biological input from the rest of the body, the team reported that brain activity varied minimally over a five-hour period.
