Date given for Eris, the new variant of Covid-19 in Turkey: There may be an increase in the number of cases in September

In the UK, it was announced that Eris (EG.5.1), a sub-derivative of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, has spread across the country. While the new variant accounts for one in every 7 cases in the country, eyes turned to Turkey. Experts said, “It seems that this process will take a little longer in Turkey. There may be an increase in the number of cases we will face or see after the 3rd, 4th week in September.”

Prof. Dr. Alper Şener from Izmir Katip Çelebi University Atatürk Training and Research Hospital, Department of Infectious Diseases, made an assessment regarding Eris (EG.5.1), a sub-derivative of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the UK.

Noting that Eris (EG.5.1), which is a sub-derivative of the Omicron variant, has started to be widely seen in European Union countries and the United States, Prof. Dr. Alper Şener pointed out that Eris variant cases may start to be seen in Turkey towards the end of September.

Prof. Dr. Şener stated that Eris (EG.5.1), which is a sub-derivative of the Omicron variant, has started to be widely seen in European Union countries and the United States of America.

“In the United States, there is an increase of up to 17 percent in admissions and an increase in hospitalization rates. In the UK, figures in the region of 40 percent are being quoted. In Ireland, an increase in hospitalization rates came to the fore in a few days.” Şener said, “Spain announced a partial increase in the number of cases originating from the UK through the Ministry of Health. Since there is a lot of travel with European Union countries, it seems that we have no chance of not being affected by this variant pool.”

“INCREASE IN CASES MAY BE OBSERVED IN TURKEY”

Şener, while announcing that Turkey has an advantage in terms of cases, said: “When we look at the climate, we are among the groups that spend time outdoors. Experts attributed the increase in the number of cases in these countries to the crowding at concerts and mainly cinemas.”

Şener continued as follows:

“In Turkey, it seems that this process will take a little longer. At least in September, there may be an increase in the number of cases we will face or see after the third or fourth week. In the period after September, the number of test positive cases will increase again. We will evaluate whether there is a severe disease picture in these cases and see whether hybrid immunization will be an advantage in terms of the number of cases in Turkey and whether it will be an advantage in terms of the range of protection.”
