There was a dangerous rapprochement between the US and Chinese air forces over the South China Sea. In a statement released by the US Indo-Pacific Command, it was reported that an RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft of the US Air Force was intercepted by a J-16 fighter jet of the Chinese Air Force with an aggressive maneuver over the South China Sea.
“The United States will continue to fly, sail and operate safely and responsibly wherever international law permits,” the statement said, adding that the US aircraft was conducting safe and routine operations in international airspace over the South China Sea in accordance with international law.
“We expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law,” the statement said, emphasizing that the US Indo-Pacific Joint Forces will continue to fly in international airspace, taking into account the safety of all ships and aircraft under international conditions.
