Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, which will be released by Activision and Sledgehammer Games, can start a new era in FPS games with its scenario and story design.
Almost everyone reading this article has played at least one game from the Call of Duty series. Therefore, players definitely know what Call of Duty’s story mode is like. The series is known for its linear progression and cinematic narrative. Every player experiences every mission in the same way, enters buildings through the same door, and performs military feats such as rescuing hostages with the same methods and the same weapons. However, things are changing fundamentally with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, which is scheduled to be released on November 10.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 story mode detailed
Developed by Sledgehammer Games, “Modern Warfare III” will feature what the team calls “open combat missions”, using open-ended areas to present different and optional objectives. Players will be able to complete the level they are playing either “headlessly” or silently. Therefore, Call of Duty will offer a “sandbox” experience for the first time in its history.
“If you’re going to be completely silent or you’re going to fire your guns, the script will fit perfectly and support how you want to play it,” David Swenson, creative director of Modern Warfare 3, told The Washington Post. The new system includes new dialogue options that will emerge based on previous decisions, as well as those that can be used if players discover certain parts of the game. As part of the new free war missions system, Call of Duty is turning into an if/when game that conditionally reacts to player choices.
Brian Bloom, the narrative director of the Call of Duty series and also a film writing experience, shared some details from the script design of the game. Bloom said that the game features branching dialogue trees that change and respond to players’ decisions and even indecision. Exploring new areas in the game will trigger conversations you might miss the first time around. Sometimes character lines will change depending on whether the player is standing still, engaged in combat, or taking any action.
Bloom also says that depending on how actors approach situations, they record lines in high and soft tones. For example, you want to handle a task silently. As you progress in this way, the lines will be spoken in a low voice.
The original “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”, released in 2007, was a turning point for first-person shooters. This trilogy, which ended with “Modern Warfare 3” in 2011, was rebooted in 2019. We will see if Modern Warfare 3, which will be released this year, will create a similar milestone.
