Apple Ushers In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence With Iphone 16

Apple will further accelerate artificial intelligence improvements in the new iPhone 16 series through the Neural Engine. Here are the details!

Samsung equipped its new Galaxy S24 series, which it introduced at the Galaxy Unpacked event, with many artificial intelligence features. As such, Apple had to turn to artificial intelligence developments.

Samsung’s heavy focus on AI and iOS 18 were rumored to bring major upgrades to Siri with new AI tools.

But it looks like Apple may upgrade the iPhone’s internal components to help make it smarter.

While generative AI remains controversial when it comes to leveraging existing assets to produce something new, a new report from Taiwan suggests that the iPhone 16 will lean into this with a new “Neural Engine” with significantly more cores.

The report doesn’t specify a specific core count, but the Neural Engine has had 12 cores since the iPhone 12 launched in 2020. It also supports recent reports that the iPhone 16 and other Apple devices will be based on new chips like the A18 and M4, each with a focus on the more powerful Neural Engine.

The Apple Neural Engine (or ANE) is a much more efficient processor than a CPU or GPU, and uses artificial intelligence for things like on-device language processing and image analysis.

This may be a bit of an oversimplification, but the Neural Engine is a piece of technology that you can thank for finding all the images of your furry friend in your photo library by searching for cats, or unlocking with Face ID and Deep Fusion techniques used in Animoji, augmented reality and image processing.

The added cores are so efficient that they can remain relatively cool, even as they work on complex data and calculations on command or in the background. If these reports about additional cores are true, it will certainly give a boost to Apple’s AI possibilities. iOS 18 is expected to make Siri significantly more useful and introduce a boost for Spotlight.
