Amazon and Embracer Group have announced that they are working on a new Lord of the Rings-themed MMO RPG game. Behind the game will be the studio behind New World.
Amazon Games announced that they will develop a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on The Lord of the Rings. Amazon stated that they will implement this project together with the Embracer Group. However, the internet world seems to have met this announcement with some distance for now.
In early development
According to the announcement, the game developed will be a PC and console game. The game, which is still in early development, is described as “an open world MMO adventure set in Middle-earth, featuring the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy.” Behind this production is Amazon Games Orange, behind another Amazon MMO, New World. County studio, New World has left a sour taste in the mouths of MMO RPG fans.
“Bringing gamers a new perspective on Lord of the Rings has long been our team’s desire, and we are honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises has entrusted this iconic world to us,” said Christoph Hartmann, Vice President of Amazon Games.
There is no release date for the LOTR MMO
Embracer acquired Middle-earth Enterprises last year, acquiring the worldwide rights to feature films, video games, board games, merchandise, theme parks and stage productions related to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. Meanwhile, Amazon canceled another The Lord of the Rings MMO last year due to a dispute with Tencent. The huge budget Rings of Power series, on the other hand, was not liked by the fans of the series last year.
Amazon clearly has a failure with Lord of the Rings, but a Lord of the Rings-themed MMO game is pretty exciting. For now, it is unclear when the game will be released or what the naming of the game will be. The game is still in early development stage. Therefore, we can roughly say that we have 3-4 years for the game.
