Famous magician David Copperfield accused of sexual harassment by 16 women.
World-famous American magician David Copperfield has been accused of sexual abuse and inappropriate behavior by 16 women. More than half of the women making the accusations say they were under 18 when they were molested. Some even said they were under 15. According to The Guardian, the accusations date from the late 1980s to 2014.
Copperfield, 67, allegedly drugged three women before having sexual intercourse with them. The famous illusionist has denied all charges against him. The women who made allegations about Copperfield’s behavior met him during his performances as one of the world’s most successful entertainers.
HE DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
Some of the women told The Guardian that they only felt able to speak out about their alleged experiences with Copperfield in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Some agreed to be named in Guardian articles.
Copperfield’s lawyers said the magician “never behaved inappropriately with anyone, let alone a minor.” The lawyers said Copperfield was a proponent of the #MeToo movement, which encourages women to tell their stories of alleged harassment, and that there had previously been “numerous unsubstantiated allegations” against the magician.
NOT THE FIRST ALLEGATION
Copperfield has come forward with similar accusations in the past. Brittney Lewis, one of the 16 women, went public in 2018 with allegations that the magician drugged and sexually assaulted his in 1988 when she was a 17-year-old model.
Copperfield denied the allegations.
CONNECTION TO EPSTEIN
Copperfield also faced scrutiny for his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in prison in 2019. Copperfield was among the celebrities named in court documents related to Epstein.
“Our client had no knowledge of Epstein’s horrific crimes,” his lawyers said, adding, “Like the rest of the world, he learned about it from the press.”
