Who Is Tufan Erhürman?
Tufan Erhürman, the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), was born on September 11, 1970, in Nicosia.
He completed his primary and secondary education at the Turkish Maarif College, and in 1988 he began studying at Ankara University Faculty of Law. Erhürman went on to complete both his master’s degree and PhD in public law at the same university. His doctoral thesis focused on “The Ombudsman and the Non-Judicial Control of Authority.”
Academic and Professional Career
Throughout his academic career, Erhürman served as a lecturer at various universities in both Turkey and Northern Cyprus. He also played an active role in the establishment of the ombudsman system within the Turkish Ministry of Justice. His work in law and public administration helped shape the legal-based political approach he would later carry into his political career.
Political Career and Leadership
Tufan Erhürman entered parliament in 2013 as a Nicosia MP representing the Republican Turkish Party (CTP). On November 13, 2016, he succeeded Mehmet Ali Talat and became the Chairman of the CTP.
Following the elections held on January 7, 2018, Erhürman became Prime Minister of a four-party coalition government. He officially took office on February 2, 2018, and served until May 22, 2019. During his tenure, Erhürman emphasized public sector reform, transparent governance, strengthening local administrations, and economic stability policies. Although the coalition lasted only 15 months, he continued to be a key figure in TRNC politics after returning to his role as leader of the opposition.
