“There Will Be No Earthquake in Istanbul in 10 Years”
Stating that an unnecessary panic was created for Istanbul, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy said, “There is a 1 percent probability that an earthquake of 6.5 magnitude will occur in Istanbul within 10 years.” These statements of Üşümezsoy became the agenda.
Earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş caused great destruction in 11 provinces, more than 45 thousand citizens lost their lives, hundreds of thousands of buildings were destroyed.
After the earthquake disaster, many explanations were made about the possible Istanbul earthquake. While some experts said that an earthquake greater than 7 might occur in Istanbul at any time, some experts claimed that there would be no major earthquake in the city until 2045.
As a guest of journalist Melis Güvenç’s YouTube channel, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy, on the other hand, made very remarkable statements. Stating that unnecessary fear and panic was created for Istanbul, Prof. Üşümezsoy evaluated the probability of a major earthquake in the city as 1 percent.
Prof. Üşümezsoy said, “An unnecessary fear and panic has been created for Istanbul. There is a 1 percent probability of an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 within 10 years.”
A HOUSE IS BUILT ON THE SWAP
Stating that the magnitude of a possible big earthquake that will take place in Istanbul will not exceed 6.5, Prof. Üşümezsoy drew attention to some districts and said:
“An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude will be felt in Avcilar, Esenyurt and Beylikdüzü regions with a magnitude of 8. It will cause great landslides. There is no need for anyone to move out of their house with this panic, but skyscrapers are still being built in Ataköy and Avcilar on swamps. Do not move here.”
Commenting on the earthquake migration that allegedly started in Istanbul after the destructions experienced after the Kahramanmaras-centered earthquakes, Prof. Üşümezsoy underlined that unnecessary fear and panic was created in the city.
