Rhodiapolis Ancient City

Rhodiapolis the ancient city near the town of Kumluca in Antalya province borders. It was established 2.5 kilometers (1.6 mi) north of Antalya Province, Kumluca District, on the hill and on its skirts. In terms of the word meaning, it is thought to be “the city of the Rhodesians”. Rhodiapolis ancient city is one of the important settlements of Eastern Lycia and was founded in the 8th century BC. The settlement area of the Rhodiapolis ancient city is located on the Mesozoic Alakırçay Formation units in the north of the Kumluca Finike Plain, which is a wide and fertile plain. The sandy-Phoenician region where Rhodiapolis located the ancient city, located in Turkey’s 1st degree earthquake zone where seismic activity is greatest. For this reason, the region and the ancient city have been subjected to the destructive effect of many historical earthquakes. Many of the solid structures built with great craftsmanship in Rhodiapolis have been deformed by the effect of earthquakes; some of them collapsed in certain directions and turned into ruins. The collapses and fractures in the building walls in the ancient city, columns that fell in the same direction, strains and collapses in the walls, rotations and repulsions in the stone wall fragments, systematic cracks in the buildings and human skeletons thought to have remained under the rubble were identified. As a result of archaeological excavations, the ruins of the theater found in the middle of the city are the strongest structures that have not reached the day. The grave monument of Opramoas, which is thought to provide financial support for the construction of the city, is located right next to the theater, but its walls are scattered around. To the southeast of the theater are an Agora and the remains of the stadium. It is also seen in a Hellenistic tower. Unfortunately, the region has been destroyed many times by treasure hunters. Archaeological excavations for the Rhodiapolis Ancient City were initiated in 2006 by the Ministry of Culture.
