Now it will translate thoughts into speech! Scientists discover new interface
Scientists have added a new one to their technological research. UC Davis researchers have developed a new interface. The interface can accurately read human thoughts and return them to speech. It is thought that this new brain-to-speech technology could help people with speech disabilities such as ALS to speak again.
A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine summarises that the technology is helping to bring the technology to life.
WILL HELP ALS PATIENTS
Five years prior to joining the study, Casey Harrell began showing symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Due to the impact of the disease on his body, Harrell soon became unable to communicate effectively with family, friends and those around him.
CAN COMMUNICATE 160 WORDS PER MINUTE
The average person can communicate about 160 words per minute through speech. However, due to ALS, Harrell was only able to say about 5-6 correct words per minute on average during his speech. After the new brain-to-speech technology was implanted in his brain, Harrell’s ability to communicate greatly improved.
