Netflix Series Calling Turkey an Occupier Caused Reactions! Ministry Made a Statement

Netflix’s Famagusta series, which will be broadcast on 20 September, caused reactions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a statement on the issue.

Netflix undoubtedly has one of the largest digital content libraries in the world. Moreover, the company, which operates in nearly 200 countries, produces content not only in the UK, Canada and the USA, but also in many countries, including Turkey, or adds content produced in those countries to its library.

Although this situation often leads to the recognition of different cultures and enables local content to make a name for itself globally, it can also lead to some problems from time to time. Most recently, the series ‘Famagusta’ filmed in Greece caused reactions in Ankara. Authorities made a statement about the series in which Turkey was shown as an occupier.

Directorate of Foreign Affairs made a statement about Netflix’s Famagusta Series

Netflix recently signed an agreement to bring a series broadcast in Greece to the platform. The production, Famagusta, centres on the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974 and tells the events that took place there in a biased way. The series portrays Turkey as an occupier and war criminal.

Although the series was not one of Netflix’s original projects, it caused reactions. Many people described it as Southern Cyprus propaganda. Even a statement came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. Officials said, ‘It serves the black propaganda of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus’ regarding the series ‘Famagusta’.

The full statement on the subject is as follows:

The series titled ‘Famagusta’, which will be broadcast on the digital platform Netflix, serves the black propaganda of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus by distorting historical facts. This series constitutes a great disrespect to the cherished memories of the Turkish Cypriots who were massacred by the Greek Cypriot gangs between 1963-74. Such futile attempts to reflect the facts differently from what they are, further strengthen our determination to fight for our national cause of Cyprus. We commemorate our Cyprus veterans with respect and our martyrs with mercy.

Famagusta will be released on Netflix on 20 September. The series does not currently have a page on Netflix Turkey. Based on the statements, it is possible to say that the platform will not broadcast this series in our country.

Nevertheless, it seems that Netflix users in our country will not like the fact that a production that tells such a biased account of historical events will be broadcast all over the world, even if not in Turkey.
