Marmara earthquake statement by Prof. Dr. Naci Görür
Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, in his assessment of the 4.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Marmara Sea, underlined that the earthquake was not on the expected northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault Line (KAF), so it is not correct to call it a precursor, and stated that speculation should not be made.
According to the information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), a 4.1 magnitude tremor was recorded with the epicenter in the Marmara Sea.
The earthquake, which occurred 3.1 kilometers off the coast of Balıkesir at 23.05, was determined to be at a depth of 4.3 kilometers.
On the other hand, Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute announced the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.5.
Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür shared a post on his social media X account after the earthquake.
Görür said, “Friends, there was a 4.5 earthquake in Harmanlı, Erdek/Balıkesir in Marmara. The earthquake did not occur on the northern branch of the KAF, which we expected. On the contrary, it was on the southern branch with a normal pulse component passing north of Erdek. It is not right to call it a pioneer or to speculate.”
