New Era in North Cyprus Politics
With the unofficial results confirming his victory, Tufan Erhürman becomes the new President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Although a total of 8 candidates were listed on the ballot, the election was widely viewed as a two-way race between Erhürman and Tatar.
Presidential Candidates on the Ballot
A total of 218,313 registered voters were eligible to participate in the 2025 TRNC presidential election. The ballot included 8 candidates, even though independent candidate Hüseyin Gürlek had announced his withdrawal in favor of Ersin Tatar before the vote. Legally, his name remained on the ballot. The candidates on the list were: Osman Zorba (Kıbrıs Sosyalist Partisi), Tufan Erhürman (CTP), Arif Salih Kırdağ (Independent), Ahmet Boran (Independent), Mehmet Hasgüler (Independent), İbrahim Yazıcı (Independent), Hüseyin Gürlek (Independent), Ersin Tatar (Independent).
Election System in the TRNC
To become president in the TRNC, a candidate must receive 50% + 1 of all valid votes. Since Tufan Erhürman surpassed this threshold in the first round, there will be no second round.
