Expanding Mental Health Support for War-Impacted Migrant Communities in Turkey

In response to the increasing mental health needs of war-impacted migrants, Turkey is rolling out comprehensive psychological support programs. These initiatives aim to address the profound mental health challenges faced by migrants from conflict zones such as Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan who have sought refuge in Turkey.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees in the world, many of whom are struggling with severe psychological distress triggered by their experiences of war, loss, and displacement. The Turkish government, in collaboration with various international NGOs and local organizations, has initiated several programs designed to provide culturally sensitive and language-specific psychological support.
These programs not only offer traditional therapy sessions but also incorporate community-based approaches that include social activities, art therapy, and sports, which help in building a sense of community and belonging among migrants. Additionally, special attention is being given to children and adolescents, who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of trauma.
One notable initiative is the ‘Healing Through Integration’ program, which is funded by the European Union and implemented in partnership with local communities. This program focuses on integrating mental health services with educational and social services to provide a holistic support system for migrants.
Dr. Leyla Haseki, a senior psychologist working with the program, stated, ‘We are deeply committed to addressing the mental health crisis among migrant communities. By providing accessible and tailored psychological services, we aim to foster resilience and facilitate smoother cultural integration.’
While these efforts are a positive step forward, challenges remain, including funding shortages and the need for more trained mental health professionals who speak Arabic, Persian, and Pashto. The success of these programs is also contingent on the ongoing cooperation between the Turkish government, international donors, and local organizations.
For expats residing in Turkey, understanding and supporting these initiatives can contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents. Expat communities are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities and awareness campaigns that support these mental health initiatives.
The expansion of these mental health services not only benefits the migrants but also contributes to the overall societal health of Turkey, promoting a more harmonious coexistence between different communities.
