Erdogan-Michotakis meeting in Greek press: Emphasis on “continuation of the positive climate”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis at the Turkish House in New York yesterday was reflected in the Greek press with an emphasis on maintaining the positive climate in bilateral relations.

Ta Nea newspaper emphasized that the rapprochement between the two countries will progress step by step in its article titled “Strong desire to maintain the positive climate”.

Kathimerini newspaper, on the other hand, carried the Erdoğan-Miçotakis meeting in its headline with the title “Roadmap for dialogue in calm waters in the Aegean”.

“In his meeting with Turkish President Erdogan, Mitsotakis expressed his sincere intention to maintain the low-tension climate that has prevailed in recent months,” the article said.

Emphasizing that the meeting took place in a positive atmosphere, the article made the following statements regarding the High Level Cooperation Council (HLC) meeting between the two countries to be held on December 7 in Thessaloniki:

“According to the Greek side, this is a step towards the full normalization of relations between the two countries.”

“Despite the determination of both sides, the road seems long,” CNN Greece wrote in its article titled 7+1 elements changing the climate in Turkish-Greek relations, pointing out that the difficult issues on the agenda will be addressed in the coming months.

Among the reasons for the positive change in the climate between the two countries, the new governments with strong popular support in Greece, Turkey and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GASC) were cited.

The article commented that the only certainty in the relations between the two countries is that the Cyprus issue remains a problem.

COMMENTS FROM THE OPPOSITION

In a statement released by the press office of Greece’s main opposition party, the Radical Left Alliance (SYRIZA), it was stated that the Erdoğan-Miçotakis meeting and the agreement on the road map including new contacts with Turkey was a positive development.

The statement criticized Mitsotakis for not referring to the Cyprus problem during the meeting, arguing that this could send a “wrong message” to Turkey.

The statement issued by the center-left PASOK, the third party in the Greek Parliament, also criticized the fact that the Cyprus issue was not mentioned in the meeting.
