Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya announced that all police officers and gendarmes will be equipped with lapel cameras in 2025. The lapel camera will be equipped with facial recognition technology.
Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya said, “In 2025, all police officers will be equipped with lapel cameras. The attitudes and behaviors of my police, my gendarmerie will be recorded in all conversations between the police and citizens.”
Criminals will be detected with facial recognition
The lapel cameras to be worn are being developed by ASELSAN. With the latest update, ASELSAN has added face recognition to these cameras. People who are wanted will be detected instantly. For example, the system will warn the police, “The person you are talking to right now is someone who has a prison sentence for the following crime and has been wanted for 3 years.”
Minister Yerlikaya used the following statements:
“In 2025, all police officers will be equipped with lapel cameras. The attitudes and behaviors of my police, my gendarmerie will be recorded in all conversations between the police and citizens.
ASELSAN will do this. I just had a meeting. ASELSAN has brought a facial recognition system to these cameras. While looking at their documents, those watching the camera from the center will immediately intervene if they are the wanted person. We will benefit from technology.”
