Karatay Madrasa
Karatay Madrasa is a Seljuk period building in Konya. The madrasa is located in the district of Karatay, Ferhuniye District, Adliye Boulevard. Karatay Madrasa was built by Emir Celaleddin Karatay in 1251 during the reign of Izzeddin Keykavus II. Its architect is unknown. The madrasa, which was used in the Ottoman period, was abandoned at the end of the 19th century.
The madrasa was built of Sille stone in the “Closed Madrasa” type to teach hadith and tafsir during the Seljuk period. It has one floor. The entrance is provided by a door made of sky and white marble from the east. The door is a masterpiece of Seljuk stone workmanship. It is decorated with lettering and patterns. There are inscriptions on the construction of the madrasa on the door. Selected verses and hadiths are embossed on the other surfaces of the door. From the door, you can enter a courtyard, which was previously covered with a dome (now open on top), and from here to the madrasa through a door. The madrasah hall is covered with a dome with a lantern in the center and covered with mosaic tiles. Verses are written on the dome rim, on the borders on the upper parts of the walls and on the panel above the cell doors. In the arch of the barrel-vaulted iwan in the west of the building, there are the basmala and Ayet-el Kürsi. In the triangles that are the transition element to the dome, the names of the prophets Muhammad, Isa, Musa and David and the names of the four caliphs (Abu Bakr, Omar, Osman, Ali) are included. The domed cell to the left of the iwan is the tomb of Celaleddin Karatay.
Most of the mosaic tiles on the walls of the madrasa have fallen off. The colors used in tiles are turquoise (turquoise), dark blue and black. Karatay Madrasa, which has an important place in Anatolian Seljuk period tile work, was opened to visitors in 1955 as the “Tile Works Museum”.
