Haluk Ozener: There may be an earthquake greater than 7 at any moment
Scientists from Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute have been examining the Marmara fault for 5 years together with Japanese scientists. Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute Director Prof. aforementioned.
Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, together with Japanese scientists, started measurements 5 years ago to understand the different features of the Marmara fault.
Ground movements are continuously recorded and data are collected with seismometers used to determine the magnitude, duration, center and time of ground shaking. The devices, located at a depth of 1200 meters in the Sea of Marmara, are placed at different points of the sea every 6 months.
WORK ON THE SEA FLOOR
Stating that the works have been going on for 5 years, Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute Director Prof. Haluk Özener explained the details of the research.
prof. Stating that they examined the features of the fault in Marmara with seismometers mounted on the sea floor in Marmara, Dr. which fault is quieter at depth. We share the results of our scientific studies. There are different studies on the seafloor.”
MEETING AFTER 6 MONTHS
Stating that the locations of the fault were mapped with the ships, Özener said that their duty is to collect data about the ships.
Stating that they have devices at a depth of 1200 meters in the Sea of Marmara, Özener said, “We throw away the devices, after 6 months we collect the data and put it in different places. Therefore, we had the chance to use it. Understand what it is. The features of the fault are side by side. Studies continue. These devices are still in Marmara Sea. “It’s collecting data from the seafloor. We’ll get that data in March.” aforementioned.
“EARTHQUAKE CAN BE OVER 7 AT ANY TIME”
Emphasizing that Marmara is in the earthquake zone, Özener said, “There may be more than 7 earthquakes at any moment. When will it happen? Nobody knows. Our work as the earth sciences community is medium and long term. What needs to be done.” “The shortest term is to make the building stock safe,” he said in Turkey.
Özener underlined that attention should be paid to the quality of building stocks.
