With city center, Ereğli (also known as Kdz.Ereğli) is the biggest district of both Zonguldak and all Black Sea Region. Today, with more than 175 thousand population, the district became an important industrial and agricultural center of the city. There are many heavy industrial factories like Erdemir and many others. Short History of Zonguldak
According to archaeological evidence, it is known that the first settlers of the region, which has a history dating back to BC 2500 years, were Hatti and later Hittites. The Anatolian Seljuk army came to the region in 1084 and conquered the region. Later, the Genoese captured the region, and the Candarogullari dominated the region during the period of the principalities. With the conquest of Amasra by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1460, Zonguldak and its surroundings were completely captured by the Ottomans. During the II.Mahmut period, the first coal was discovered in the region in 1829, and in 1848 the first coal mines were opened, which were operated by Belgian and French companies.

Those coming from the direction of Istanbul enter the Düzce exit and follow the coastline, and those entering from the Ankara direction reach the city center starting from the Yeniçağa turn.
