Which Insurances and Taxes to be Paid for Foreigners in Turkey After Purchasing a Car?

Foreigners living legally in Turkey can purchase cars with blue license plates or known as tax-free, and get on the road legally with these vehicles. According to the applicable rule, these cars are exempt from VAT and SCT and can only be bought and sold among foreign citizens. Just like the cars wned by Turkish citizens, vehicles with blue plates used by foreigners also have compulsory traffic insurance and MVT payment obligations. There is an exception in the relevant law regarding MVT:

“b) To the embassies and consulates of foreign states in Turkey, ambassadors, chargé d’affaires and consuls (except honorary consuls) and embassy and consular officers who are nationals of that state, and international boards headquartered in Turkey and foreign national officers of these boards, on condition that they are reciprocal and cars belonging to delegates and delegations coming to the country for an official duty and foreign nationals who are members of these delegations.”

However, all cars with blue plates that do not comply with the above article are also considered as MVT taxpayers. As it can be understood from the above-mentioned issues, foreigners who legally purchase blue-plate cars in Turkey have similar obligations. In addition, if there is a “Green Card Insurance” policy for the foreigner’s cars, additional compulsory traffic insurance will not be requested.
