What Does Aftershock Mean? Details About The Types of Earthquakes

Aftershocks became one of the terms we heard the most because of the news on the agenda. Citizens wonder what the aftershock means, which is frequently mentioned in expert opinions. So what is an aftershock?

The phenomenon of shaking of the environment and the surface, in which the vibrations that occur suddenly due to cracks in the earth’s crust spread as waves, is called “EARTHQUAKE“.

Earthquake is a natural phenomenon that shows that the soil that people consider immobile and on which they step on safely will also move and that all the structures on it may be damaged and destroyed in such a way as to cause loss of life.

The branch of science that examines how an earthquake occurs, how earthquake waves propagate on the earth, measuring instruments and methods, evaluation of records and other issues related to earthquakes is called “SEISMOLOGY”.

TYPES OF EARTHQUAKE

Earthquakes can be of different types according to their causes. Although most earthquakes in the world occur as described above, there are other types of earthquakes that occur in small quantities due to other natural causes. The earthquakes that occur as a result of the movement of the plates described above are generally defined as “TECTONIC” earthquakes and these earthquakes mostly occur at the edges of the plates. 90% of the earthquakes on earth are in this group.

Earthquakes in Turkey are mostly tectonic earthquakes. The second type of earthquakes are “VOLCANIC” earthquakes. These are formed as a result of the eruption of volcanoes. It is known that such earthquakes are caused by the explosion of gases formed as a result of physical and chemical events during the eruption of molten material in the depths of the earth. Because they are related to volcanoes, they are local and do not cause significant damage. Some earthquakes in Japan and Italy fall into this group. Since there are no active volcanoes in Turkey, such earthquakes do not occur.

Another type of earthquake is “DEEP” earthquakes. These are the collapse of the ceiling block, underground cavities (caves), galleries in coal mines, cavities formed as a result of melting in salt and gypsum fields. Emotional zones are local and low in energy and do not cause much harm. Large landslides and meteorites falling from the sky are also known to cause minor tremors.

The waves that occur up to the coasts after the Deep Sea Earthquakes, whose focal point is the sea floor, and sometimes cause great damage to the coasts, are called Tsunami.

WHAT DOES ARTÇI EARTHQUAKE MEAN?

Sometimes there are small tremors before a big earthquake happens. These small tremors are called “PIONEER EARTHQUAKES”.

Even after a major earthquake has occurred, perhaps a few hundred smaller earthquakes continue to occur. These small earthquakes are called “POST EARTHQUAKE” and there is a decrease in intensity and number compared to the moment of the big earthquake.
