Three Faults Were Broken in The Biggest Earthquake Of The Last 100 Years: Longer Than Golcuk and Duzce Combined

Speaking about the earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 that occurred consecutively in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, İzmir Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ) Earthquake Research and Application Center (DAUM) Director Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir said, “As far as I can see, at least 3 fault segments have been broken. The total surface rupture length has exceeded 500 kilometers. This shows that a longer rupture has developed than the sum of the 17 August 1999 Gölcük earthquake and 12 November 1999 Düzce earthquakes.

Turkey’s Eastern, Southeastern, Mediterranean, Central Anatolian and Black Sea regions were shaken by earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 affecting 10 provinces centered in Kahramanmaraş.

After the earthquakes that caused destruction, death and injury, search and rescue efforts continue in the regions. DEU DAUM President and Geological Engineering Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir made statements about earthquakes.

Biggest Earthquake

“BIGEST EARTHQUAKE OF 100 YEARS”

prof. Sözbilir said, “When I combine the observations I have made on my way to the earthquake zone since yesterday with the earthquake data, I can easily say that this earthquake is the biggest earthquake that has occurred in Turkey in the last 100 years.

As far as I can see, at least 3 fault segments are broken. The total surface rupture length exceeded 500 kilometers.

This shows that a longer rupture developed than the sum of the 17 August 1999 Gölcük earthquake and 12 November 1999 Düzce earthquakes.

“THE FIRST 72 HOURS ARE CRITICAL FOR THOSE ATTENDED”

Reminding that thousands of officials, especially AFAD teams, did their best, Prof.

10 times more than civilian vehicles, aid and search and rescue vehicles. This delays the aid that should go to those trapped under the rubble.

The 72-hour life expectancy of our people under the rubble is getting shorter day by day. I want to call out as a scientist from Hatay. If you want your relatives and friends under the rubble to be rescued, do not go into traffic unless there is a vital reason, and do not cause the entrance and exit to the city to be locked.
