They Discovered Something Unseen Before in Izmir

During the archaeological excavations carried out in the ancient city of Klazomenai in the Urla district of Izmir, a discovery was made that stunned researchers. During the excavations, a perirrhanterion (sink), which was determined to be 2,500 years old, was found.

Klazomenai, one of the 12 Ionian city-states, is located on the northern coast of the Urla-Cesme Peninsula, in the middle of the Izmir Bay.

‘NEVER SEEN LIKE’

A 2,500 year old perirrhanterion (large, flat-shaped vessel-sink sitting on a high leg, used for body cleansing) was found in Klazomenai, the ceramic production center of the ancient period.

Excavation Director Ersoy gave the following information:

“Klazomenai is one of the Ionian city-states in Western Anatolia. It is considered to be one of the most important ceramic production centers in the region, especially in the Archaic period, in the 6th century BC. In the excavations carried out here, we find a large number of figural ceramics produced by workshops connected with the city. During the excavations last year, a sink base and base decorated with fantastic mythological creatures and chariot races were found.This 6th century BC artifact dates from approximately 2,500 years ago.We do not know of any such figures, embossed and painted, until now. “
