Turkey was shaken by two major earthquakes that hit Kahramanmaraş on Monday, 6 February.

The first earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in Pazarcık occurred at around 04:17. After this 7.7 magnitude earthquake, another earthquake occurred at 13.24. The magnitude of the earthquake, the epicenter of which was in the district of Elbistan, was recorded as 7.6.

According to the information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

The earthquake, which is called the disaster of the century; It caused great destruction in Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Diyarbakır, Adana, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Malatya and Hatay.

On the 5th day of the earthquake, the total loss of life in 10 provinces rose to 18,342. The number of injured was announced as 74 thousand 242 and the number of destroyed buildings as 6 thousand 444.

On the other hand, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu shared the information that 120 police and over 32 gendarmerie personnel have lost their lives in the earthquake so far.

More than 1,400 aftershocks occurred in the region following the earthquakes.

Efforts to rescue citizens trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings continue at full speed.

29 thousand 622 search and rescue personnel of AFAD, PAK, JAK, JÖAK, DİSAK, Coast Guard, DAK, fire brigade, rescue, MEB, NGOs and international teams are working in the region. The number of search and rescue personnel from other countries is 6 thousand 479.

MORE THAN 120 THOUSAND STAFF

With the number of field personnel assigned from AFAD, Police, Gendarmerie, MSB, UMKE, ambulance teams, volunteers, local security and local support teams, the number of personnel working in the region reached 120 thousand 344.

An air bridge was established for the delivery of personnel and materials to the region with a total of 160 aircraft affiliated to the Air Force, Land Forces, Coast Guard and Gendarmerie General Command.

22 ships, 20 belonging to the Naval Forces Command and 2 belonging to the Coast Guard Command, were assigned to the region for personnel, material shipment and evacuation.

10 thousand 973 tents and 1 million 507 thousand 494 blankets that were heavily affected by the earthquake were shipped by AFAD, the Ministry of Family and Social Services and the Red Crescent. The installation of 97 thousand 973 family living tents has also been completed.

CALL EDUCATION IN TURKEY UNTIL 20 FEBRUARY

Due to the earthquake that caused great destruction in 10 provinces, Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer announced that education was suspended throughout the country until 20 February.

Minister Özer, “Due to the earthquake disaster we experienced, we decided to extend the break we took in education in Turkey until February 20.”

On the other hand, Minister Özer also announced on NTV live broadcast that there will be no obligation to attend schools located in the earthquake zone.

The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) announced that the opening of universities after the earthquake was suspended until a second announcement.
