THE BIGGEST EARTHQUAKE IN HUMAN HISTORY OCCURED 3800 YEARS AGO

The 9.5-magnitude earthquake that took place in Chile 3,800 years ago marks the biggest earthquake ever detected on earth.

As a result of their research, archaeologists have revealed that the 9.5-magnitude earthquake caused a tsunami of about 8 thousand kilometers wide and that no new settlements were established on the coastline of Chile for a thousand years. It was detected that in the tsunami that followed the earthquake that occurred in the northern regions of Chile about 3800 years ago, the wavelength exceeded 20 meters and the waves reached New Zealand.

The largest known earthquake prior to the new discovery was the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake, which also occured in Chile. The magnitude of this earthquake was measured between 9.4 and 9.6, and 6 thousand people died as a result of the great shaking.

While the width of the surface rupture in the Valdivia earthquake reached 800 kilometers, it was understood that the earthquake that occurred 3800 years ago caused a 1000-kilometer break. In this respect, the earthquake in ancient times had a much greater impact than the Valdivia earthquake.

Valdivia Earthquake, 1960, Chile

NO NEW SETTLEMENT HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR A THOUSAND YEARS

According to James Goff, a geologist at the University of Southampton in England and the author of the study, an earthquake of this magnitude in the north of the country was unlikely to happen, because it was not thought that a rupture would occur long enough to have this effect. On the other hand, the evidence reached by the researchers also revealed the colossal scale of the earthquake, with finds of sand, gravel and some sea creatures unique to the coastal regions unexpectedly inland of the Atacama Desert in Chile.
